Mogra Star Academy was opened by Hannah Njoroge in 1998 in Mathare. Hannah had lived in Mathare and understood the plight of the underprivileged children whose parent could not afford to take them to school. She started a low fees school targeting slum children. Initially, the school admitted 300 children for both primary and secondary school. All the children were fee paying and fees collected used run to the school. Gradually Hannah was made aware of many more children who were left out of school due to lack of the low fees.

She started looking for financial assistance for the children who could not pay fees. She secured financial assistance for some of these children, but majority were unsupported. The underprivileged children scared off the parents of fee paying children, and eventually it became solely a school for children living in total poverty and who could not afford even the smallest of fees. Since then, the school receivessupport from different sources andis able to sustain its operations.

In summary, Mogra supports over 1,156 children. This includes the children from Mogra Children’s Home.
